Volvo XC70

$35,000.00 Released October, 2003

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Fuel economy exceeds the documentation. (I average 7 L/100km on the highway and about 9 L/100km in the city under regular driving conditions). Excellent power, great acceleration. Good pulling power (3300 lbs according to the documentation).

The Cons:No built-in blue-tooth and no USB or external connectors on the stereo. Depending on your location, major repairs can be expensive. Routine maintenance is slightly non-standard for small engine cars. For example, it requires 6L of oil (as opposed to most small cars being 5L or less). Fuel filters are often not stocked by jiffy-service stations.

The Volvo XC70 is an all wheel drive station wagon with many of the features of the larger SUVs (such as wider wheel base, higher clearance, all wheel drive, etc) with the lower form-factor of a standard station wagon.

It comes in several versions, including the -R or sport model.  Reviewed here is the vanilla AWD 2004 model.  Some of the basic specs include a 2.5 Litre 5-Cylinder turbo-charged engine, headlight wipers, and All Wheel Drive.

Anti-slip works great without subtracting from agressive driving. (I can still spin the wheels if I drive very hard, unlike many modern vehicles).

Fantastic storage room, well designed trunk space.

Quiet ride, even on poor tires.

Extremely safe, in all accident situations.

Wide wheel base makes it extremely stable, and the suspension minimizes body roll.

Headlight wipers actually work, and keep the lights clear in muddy or icy driving conditions.

All leather interior, including dash and door panels. Excellent quality leather, nicely appointed.

Independent climate control that actually works.

Good stereo system with appropriate amount of bass, and good clarity.

Tip-tronic gear shifting for when you want that manual transmission feel, automatic by default.

Super comfortable seats, both front and back. Plenty of room in the rear for 6' tall, 200lb adults in all three seatbelt positions. Front seats are all-power and extremely customizable.

    Very reliable, minimal maintenance required.

Excellent styling; many people comment on the outward appearance of the vehicle.

    Stylishly appointed interior, feels upper-class.

The 2004 model has extremely positive reviews for life-expectancy and overall quality. This car should last a very long time.

All wheel drive adds to the feeling of control and safety when driving in inclement weather conditions, including ice, snow, slush, rain, and mud.

  • 1

High clearance and well-designed skid-plate. Comfortable driving in mild off-road conditions such as seldom-used mountain trials (from personal experience).

Michael R Ireland: #volvo_xc70 We've owned a 2004 Volvo XC70 since 2008, and we are totally in love with this car. With the included features, our model would have cost approximately $65,000 Canadian when brand new, and we paid about $30,000 for a lease-return with 84,000 km on the odometer.

We have had no trouble at all with this car. We paid about $700 CAD for brand new Michelin HydroEdge tires including installation & balancing.

The ride is very smooth, power is great, handling is great, pulling power is fantastic, and overall fit and finish is spectacular. Everyone who takes this car for a spin loves it. Even though this is not a sport model, it still has plenty of guts for those times that you want to merge into high speed traffic, or just want to show off at the stop light. This car impresses everyone.

One of the reasons we chose the 2004 model over many of the newer models was that this specific model had virtually 0 negative reviews on the internet. In fact, the only negative comments we could find were about superficial details such as cup holders (although we quite like the cup holers in this car!) I am quite interested to see what anyone else has to say about this car from their experience. May 22, 10
