Product Shot 2 Also known as a "city coupe", its trademark features are fuel efficiency, low emissions, safety, and small size.

The new fortwo becomes smart's primary focus, with other models dropped in favor of this, their most popular model. The most notable changes to the smarttwo over the previous generation is its more powerful engine, and its larger size. It features a 1.0 liter, three-cylinder engine mounted below the trunk floor in front of the rear axle that delivers 71 hp and 68 lb-ft torque. The top speed of the fortwo has subsequently increased to 90 mph (145 km/h) making able to easily handle highway speeds.

  • increased top speed to 90 mph
  • fuel: ~40 mpg (gasoline), 8.7 gallon tank
  • price: $12,000 - $17,000

Trim levels

The smart forttwo will be available in two trim levels, 1) Pure, a coupe model starting at under $12,000, 2)The more upscale Passion, which adds air conditioning, alloy rims and a transparent polycarbonate roof available as either a coupe ($13,590) or a cabriolet convertible ($16,590). The convertible features a retractable soft-top that automatically converts with the push of a button.

There is a $99 reservation program available at smartusa.com, and and smart is currently providing previews across the USA as part of their "street smart" tour. There is much speculation about how this car will be received in America; as a comparison 4,000 first-gen smart cars were sold in Canada since they became available in 2004. An all electric version, the fortwo EV, is available in Europe with a top speed of 70 mph.
